What Is Amateur Radio (Ham Radio)?
Amateur radio, also called ham radio is a very fun hobby and also a public service in times of natural disaster.
Meet new friends all over this big world via ham radio! Amateur radio has saved many lives over the years in times of disaster such as earthquakes, tornadoes, floods, etc. And cellphones usually will not work during a major disaster since all curcuits will be busy, that is a fact! The only other means of communications are by radio, and that is where ham radio operators shine. They are able to come together and relay important messages out of the area or within the area.

Since amateur radio operators know their stuff when it comes to communications, they are able to provide emergency communications when there are no other means available. You don't hear a lot in the media about this but hams usually are behind the scenes and using neccessary skills they are trained with. It is not difficult to get your ham radio license, just an interest and a litte study time. It is also a great hobby where you can meet people all over the world, yes, hams can communicate with many other countries, just like on the internet, but by using their radios. (now days, the internet also plays an important part in ham radio also and hams use the internet tied in with ham radio, but if the internet don't work, radio still does).

Amateur radio operators have always been on the cutting edge of technology and were the ones who brought about radio, TV, and most other electronic technologies in the first place! They have been communicating by radio way before the internet, using radio, ham radio satellites, computers, all for no monthly fee, just the cost of equipment which is about the cost of a home computer or less.
I have been involved since I was 12 yrs old and have been interested ever since. No matter your age or sex, anyone can get involved and do as much or little with it as you please. There are no obligations at all, do as much or little as you please with it, meet new friends locally in your local club (yes, just about every town you can think of has a club) or around the world and have fun! ....Larry (FCC Radio Call Sign: WD0AKX)
